DUTIES:
Performs, independently, difficult and complex tests and examinations. Performs chemistry determinations, including cardiac enzymes, special chemistries including HIV, Hepatitis Testing, PSA, Testosterone, Vitamin D, Hemoglobin A1C, Quantitative urine analysis and Prolactin. Adheres to proper patient identification process for sample collection; verifies samples are labeled with the required attributes and verifies request forms are legible and completed without discrepancies. Performs blood and body fluid analyses using constituent and the study of coagulation system. Receives requests for testing into the Laboratory; functions as a resources person for VAMC personnel on specimen collection requirements and patient preparation for any lab requests.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-5.

Specialized Experience: Experience in reviewing blood and component requests for appropriateness of product and quantity of units to provide correct blood product with minimum waste, accesses the VAMC's Blood Center link to verify any prior ABO; Rh, compatibility testing and antibody screening. Identifies human blood components, particularly in white cell differentials, the morphology of red cells, and the examination of stained stool, urine, nasal, sputum, or other body fluid preparations. Time stamping and labeling of all specimens with arrival and completion. Telephoning of emergency results, proper logging in of all specimens, preparing of same for analyses and the technical knowledge to screen and recognize abnormal findings and take the right action. Uses a wide array of equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, balances, spectrophotometers, and similar instruments used in laboratory testing.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) based on your application for this position.

1. Knowledge of infectious disease concepts, methodology and concepts involved in quality control in laboratory.

2. Knowledge of processing and storage requirements and procedures for laboratory specimens.

3. Knowledge and skill required to perform a wide range of chemical analyses.

4. Knowledge of patient identification methods and procedures established by regulatory and accrediting agencies.

5. Knowledge basic clerical and record keeping techniques.
